Tonya Lee Williams and K.C. Collins are putting Canadian indie film on Death Row.
Williams and Collins have joined the cast of Sons 2 The Grave, a drama written and produced by Toronto-based Lynn Stolz, and the first movie project from the iconic gangsta rap label Death Row Records after it was acquired last January by Toronto-based WIDEawake Entertainment Group for $18 million.
Dorian Harewood and child actor Cameron Miles Jones will also co-star in the Canadian-ized Boyz in the Hood pic about a young man (Collins) whose dream of making it in the NBA is cut short by gangland violence.
Danny Glover is also provisionally attached to the Canadian feature, contingent on his availability. Glover’s recent credits include Clement Virgo’s Poor Boy’s Game, the 2007 drama that also starred Williams and Collins.
Sons 2 The Grave ’embodies what we’re trying to do with Death Row, to tell human stories that don’t always have happy endings, and that allow us to learn from violence and disenfranchised lives, but not glorify it,’ said Death Row Records CEO Lara Lavi after launching a spin-off Death Row Films division, based in Toronto.
The film will use tunes from the Death Row Records catalogue, which includes tracks and albums by Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Doggy Dogg, for its soundtrack.
Williams is also doing a star turn in the CBC drama The Border, where she will play a senior U.S. Department of Homeland Security agent in the White Pine Pictures series.
