Hot Docs and Canwest have picked 11 projects to receive a total of $254,500 in grants and no-interest loans from the Canwest-Hot Docs Documentary Fund. Established in 2008, the monies are made up of a $3 million completion fund and a $1 million development fund targeted to help cash-strapped doc makers.
Four completion grants were given to Atanasoff (Mila Aung-Thwin, Daniel Cross/EyeSteelFilm), Blood, Sweat and Beers (Ron Goetz/Partners in Motion), Injury (Frederic Bohbot/Bunbury Ontic Films) and Water on the Table (Liz Marshall, Susan McGrath/Water on the Table).
Seven no-interest loans were provided to Angry Inuk (Unikkaat Studios), Big Red & Eddie (Little Dog Productions), Just Blow It Up (Six Island Productions), Metamorphosis (Conquering Lion Pictures), Ton Up! (Tony Devenyi), Transformation (Loaded Pictures) and Uprooted (Lowik Media 2008).
Projects were considered by a selection committee which included Sean Farnel, director of programming, Hot Docs; Sarah Jane Flynn, director, factual content, Canwest Media; and Gary Marcuse, writer/producer/director, Face to Face Media.
