Comedy Network has pulled the plug on Jon Dore, ending the run of his self-titled show after two seasons despite a jump in its ratings.

The show, which typically saw the Ottawa comic addressing various issues or his own shortcomings, averaged 65,000 viewers over its final 13 episodes, up from a season one average of just 18,000. The show also made significant gains among the channel’s key 18-34 demographic, according to Comedy.

The Jon Dore Television Show is due to run in the U.S. on the Independent Film Channel, and Dore himself was just last week named one of Variety‘s 10 Comics to Watch. He has recently relocated to L.A.

‘Dore’s man-on-the-street stylings, shaggy beard and flannel get-up are apt to draw comparisons to Tom Green,’ said the trade paper. ‘However, his humor is far more self-deprecating than the blunt shenanigans of his Great White North compatriot.’

Dore announced the cancellation during the Toronto version of Just for Laughs, while performing stand-up with his newly unemployed writers. He also played two clips that never made it to air. One, which included prominent displays of swastikas, was, according to Dore, held back by the producers at Insight Productions. The other, an extended dialogue between Dore and an aborted human fetus found in a garbage can, was apparently nixed by Comedy.

‘We were cancelled, did I mention that?’ said Dore after playing them for the crowd.
