$1 million-plus for Party! 2

The teen romance sequel A vos marques…Party! 2 has passed the $1.2 million mark at the Quebec box office in the face of stiff competition from Hollywood franchise titans.

The Quebecois film from director Frédéric D’Amours, released on June 16 on 100 screens province-wide to a target teen girl audience, grossed $523,000 in its first five days.

A vos marques… Party! 2 will now play on 86 screens in Quebec as the sequel tries to match the $2 million box office posted by the first A vos marques film in 2007.

Produced by Christian Larouche and Caroline Héroux, the French-language teen comedy is distributed by E1 Entertainment’s Les Films Christal, and sub-distributed by Les Films Séville.

Victor Rego, vice-president of marketing and distribution at Seville, says the film’s challenge going forward is maintaining screens as exhibitors roll out Hollywood tentpoles like Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

‘There’s a lot of product being aimed at our audience. And the competition through the summer will keep building,’ he said Monday, after the sequel raked in another $90,000 over the weekend.

Seville and promotional partners like Super Écran continue their newspaper advertising, and targeting social network sites like Facebook and Twitter as they employ web-based marketing that worked on their earlier Twilight release campaign in Quebec.

‘We’ve made the web campaign as dynamic as we could. The film already had a huge fan base [from the first film], so we’re feeding that interest and we’ve managed that quite well,’ Rego said.

Seville plans a late fall DVD release for A vos marques… Party! 2.
