Music and news channels scrambled on Friday to fill their schedules with Michael Jackson, following the sudden death of the King of Pop.
Retrospectives and tributes quickly appeared on the weekend grids of MuchMusic and MTV, including a two-hour special hosted by the former’s Matt Wells and Sarah Taylor, playing videos from Jackson’s decades-spanning career. MuchMusic also grabbed the 1997 short film Ghosts, a dance piece on which Jackson worked with Stephen King.
Meanwhile, the more talkative MTV lifted programming from its U.S. cousin, including an hour-long news special with parting thoughts from the likes of Madonna and Jackson’s ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley.
CTV said Friday it would dedicate that night’s CTV National News to Jackson, with L.A. bureau chief Tom Walters reporting on the latest developments, and London’s Tom Kennedy covering worldwide reaction.
On Bravo!, programmers found a spot on Saturday morning for 1978’s The Wiz — an all-black retelling of The Wizard of Oz, with a 19-year-old Jackson as the Scarecrow — while the A channels slotted the Alberta-shot biopic Man in the Mirror on Friday night.
