J’ai tué ma mére continues to play to strong numbers in Quebec, drawing a very healthy $9,100 from 15 screens through its second week.
The feature by 20-year-old Xavier Dolan had grossed some $308,000 for the week ending June 18, leaving distributor K-Films Amérique bullish about its prospects as the picture headed into its third week.
‘We are very happy because this last weekend we had an increase of 25% for the third week,’ says president Louis Dussault, predicting, ‘We will reach $450,000 in the box office with just 15 prints.’ The picture is playing mainly on French screens.
J’ai tué ma mére is set to make its out-of-province debut at TIFF in September. It will then play the Vancouver International Film Festival and, depending on how it’s received, K-Films might seek a theatrical release in English Canada.
Last week also saw the debut of the teen comedy ¿ vos marques…Party! 2, which took the top spot among Canadian-mades after just two days in theaters, grossing around $167,300.
Both titles are well ahead of Atom Egoyan’s Adoration and the Mongrel Media docs Waterlife and Act of God — the only other domestic films on the charts so far this summer. Now in its seventh week, Act of God has earned a total of about $28,900 for the week ending June 19, attracting a core audience of ‘documentary and Jennifer Baichwal fans,’ according to company exec Tom Alexander. Waterlife has totaled $7,900 after two weeks and continues to move across the country. Adoration‘s take stands at just over $110,500.
Act of God is set to be released on DVD in November in Canada and the U.S., while Waterlife is slated for DVD in August.
Among Hollywood titles, Warner’s sleeper hit The Hangover continues to dominate the box office, totaling about $10.4 million after two weeks. Disney/Pixar’s animated Up follows with $15.5 million.
