It’s all upside for Sophie Paquin when it comes to this year’s prix Prix Gemeaux.
Les hauts et les bas de Sophie Paquin (The Ups and Downs of Sophie Paquin) took 15 nominations in this the 24th installment of the awards. The ceremony will be broadcast Sept. 20 on Radio-Canada.
Sophie swept the best supporting female in a comedy category, grabbing all five nominations, with Christiane Pasquier, Élise Guilbault, Isabelle Vincent, Marie-Thérèse Fortin, Pauline Martin each receiving noms. Lead Suzanne Clément also got a nod for best actress in a comedy.
The program, which is up for best comedy series, is about a single mom who runs her own talent agency. It first aired in 2006 on SRC. The show’s success in Quebec caused it to spin off an English version, Sophie, which has since been cancelled.
Although Sophie Paquin dominated, the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television also felt strongly about Les étoiles filantes, which landed 12 nominations, and Les Invincibles and Providence, which garnered 11 nods each.
Interestingly, Les Invincibles took three of the five lead actor nominations — François Létourneau, Patrice Robitaille and Pierre-François Legendre. (Why no love for Rémi-Pierre Paquin?) The remaining two nominations went to François Papineau (États-humains ) and Stéphane Crête (Les étoiles filantes).
Up for best lead actress is Maude Guérin (Belle-Baie), Sylvie Moreau (États-humains), Myriam LeBlanc (Les étoiles filantes), Catherine Trudeau (Les Invincibles) and Isabel Richer (Les soeurs Elliot).
