Muse readies Follett thriller

BANFF — Movie Central and The Movie Network have unveiled plans for a raft of series and specials due to air in 2010, including an eight-part adaptation of the Ken Follett thriller The Pillars of the Earth and a new comedy from George F. Walker and Dani Romain.

Pillars of the Earth is an eight-part mini from Muse Entertainment, Tandem Communications and Scott Free Productions, now in preproduction, with Donald Sutherland and Ian McShane (Kings, Deadwood) signed to star.

The pay-TV channels are also attached to Living in Your Car, a half-hour comedy and the latest from Walker and Romain — of This Is Wonderland and The Line — with an assist from lead director and creative consultant David Steinberg (Curb Your Enthusiasm).

Also due in 2010 is Muse’s The Phantom, a four-hour mini and reworking of the 1930s comic strip hero. The copro with the Sci-Fi Channel stars Ryan Carnes (Desperate Housewives) and Sandrine Holt (24).

Meet Phil Fitz, a 13-ep series, billed as an edgy comedy, is also due to run in 2010 following shooting this fall in Nova Scotia under producers Mike Souther and Teza Lawrence, E1 Television, Big Motion Pictures and creator Sheri Elwood.

The first day of the Banff World Television Festival saw Family Channel and Playhouse Disney Canada announce the half-hour comedies Angel on Campus from Temple Street Productions and Baxter from Shaftesbury Films.
