MPs, senators and other VIPs gathered at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa on Wednesday night for a screening of One Week — an event put together by Heritage Minister and motorcycle enthusiast James Moore, looking to both show off domestic film talent and raise cash for cancer research.
The film stars Joshua Jackson as a young man who, upon learning he has cancer, buys a motor bike and rides across Canada, from Toronto to Tofino.
‘The idea of someone buying a motorcycle and driving across Canada interested him,’ as did the cancer connection, said Moore’s spokesperson Deirdra McCracken.
Moore participates every year in the Motorcycle Ride for Dad, a fundraiser for prostate cancer research. McCracken says he saw screening the film as an opportunity to raise funds and awareness for the charity.
‘We thought it would be great opportunity for the minister, now that spring is here, the weather is little nicer, for the minister to host a movie night an encourage his fellow parliamentarians and staff on the hill to check out and encourage some Canadian talent,’ said McCracken.
Some 300 people were expected to attend, including the Prime Minister’s wife, Laureen Harper, also a motorbike rider, says McCracken. The PM himself was out of town. A gala followed with stars Liane Balaban and Campbell Scott and director Michael McGowan in attendance.
One Week has enjoyed a strong run in theaters since its debut in the spring, handled by Mongrel Media.
‘I am thrilled that Moore has taken an interest in our film,’ said Mongrel boss Hussain Amarshi ‘With someone at his level being interested is good for us, Canadian cinema needs more champions and he is a champion.’
One Week is due on DVD June 16.
