Adoration losing steam

After three weeks in theaters and more than doubling its screens, the numbers for Atom Egoyan’s Adoration are looking a little soft.

The picture, which debuted to a promising per screen average of some $6,000, has since gone from four to ten screens, though its average has sunk to just over $2,100.

Its total box office take for the week ending May 28 stands at about $86,700, not quite what E1 Entertainment had hoped.

‘While we are somewhat disappointed in the grosses to date, we are extremely proud of Adoration, in terms of its critical reception and positive audience reaction that we have received in both North America and Europe,’ says Bryan Gliserman, co-president of E1 Entertainment, adding that the distributor expects ‘a long theatrical life from this picture before it goes to ancillary markets.’

The drama — about a boy and his alleged terrorist parents — arrived in theaters on May 8, taking its chances amid the beginning of the summer blockbuster season a year after its bow at Cannes, where it took the festival’s ecumenical prize. It has met with mixed reviews from critics.
