Sales spree for Amreeka

E1 Entertainment has closed a raft of international sales for the Canadian copro Amreeka, following its screening at Cannes.

The picture, a copro by Winnipeg’s Buffalo Gal Pictures with the U.S. and Kuwait, has been sold to Sharmill Films, which will distribute in Australia, National Geographic in the U.S., WEG in India and Cineart in Benelux. Elsewhere in the European market, Amreeka will be handled by Look Now! in Switzerland, Festival Films in Spain, Iguana in Italy and Memento Films in France.

Amreeka is a real audience pleaser,’ says E1’s Charlotte Mickie, noting that ‘civilians’ responded well to the film at Cannes and earlier this year at Sundance. ‘And so did the critics. It’s a great combination. When a film is this sincere and so well made it’s irresistible.’

At Cannes, Amreeka also walked away with the FIPRESCI award. The story follows a Palestinian family’s struggle to adapt to life in the U.S.
