BBC vet to lead digital news

Rachel Nixon is the new director of digital media for CBC News, hiring the BBC vet away from the citizen journalist site nowpublic.com.

Nixon is currently global news director the Vancouver-based site, and before that was deputy world editor for bbcnews.com in London. While at the BBC she was responsible for the ‘After Saddam’ presentation, which earned the European Online Journalism Award in 2003, and also covered such stories as 9/11, the war in Iraq and the U.S. presidential elections of 2004.

She takes over at CBC for Jonathan Dube, starting on June 1.

She will be responsible for ‘charting the overall strategic direction for CBC News’ digital media unit — setting the right priorities, and overseeing the successful execution of the strategy,’ said news chief Jennifer McGuire in a memo to staff on Tuesday. ‘Her background in strategic planning, development, and delivery of editorial content makes her the ideal candidate for this role.’
