Everyone’s a Critic: Plaudits for Costello

Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…: Mixed reviews greeted the musically minded talk show when it premiered on U.S.-based Sundance Channel in December (Hollywood Reporter called it ‘tough viewing’), but Canuck critics are decidedly more enthusiastic about the show, hosted by Brit singer-songwriter Elvis Costello, currently airing on CTV.

The Globe and Mail applauds Costello as a ‘very capable host and interviewer,’ while Canwest News Service calls Spectacle ‘quiet, low key and utterly fascinating,’ adding that it could be ‘the best talk program about music ever made.’ TVguide.ca says Costello leads ‘candid discussions that make viewers feel like they’re eavesdropping.’

Hank and Mike: The Easter bunny-themed comedy, directed by Quebec’s Matthiew Klinck, arrived on DVD April 7 after a limited run in theaters in Canada and the U.S., while it sold to multiple territories including the Czech Republic, Australia and Israel.

Critics embraced the quirky tale about a couple of misfit Easter bunnies who are downsized from the corporate entity that runs the holiday.

Eye Weekly writes Hank and Mike’s humor is ‘balanced with sensitivity and sympathy for its working-class caricatures,’ while the National Post calls the film ‘hilarious.’ Variety observes that the characters ‘interact like a furry version of The Odd Couple.’
