MONTREAL — Actress Laurence Leboeuf and producer Josée Vallée were among the five women working in Quebec film and television honored at the 11th annual Femmes du Cinéma de la télévision et des nouveaux médias gala Wednesday night.
FCTNM also acknowledged the work of actress Kim Yaroshevskaya (Dancing on the Moon) and Annie Pierard, the writer behind the popular teleroman Annie et ses hommes. Director and editor Hélène Girard, who recently cut the Jutra-nominated La Brunante, was awarded the Vision Globale prize and Anne Marie La Traverse, executive producer of Flashpoint, picked up an award for her work on the international scene. La Traverse also produced Hunt for Justice: The Louise Arbour Story and Tripping the Wire.
Vallée, who picked up the Michel Trudel prize, is the head of reputed production house Cirrus Communications. She says that although there are numerous female producers in the Quebec film and television industry, both in the private sector and at the major broadcasters such as TVA, Radio-Canada and Astral, men still dominate at the top. ‘I am one of the few women working in TV and film who actually heads her own production company,’ said the 40-year-old producer.
Like most private producers Vallée said she’s very concerned about the future of Quebec TV. ‘We don’t know what the new rules for the Canadian Media Fund will be. We are doing our best right now to make our case, but the future is very uncertain.’
Over 300 gathered for the FCTNM ceremony, which was held at Montreal`s Hyatt Regency and hosted by actress Marina Orsini.
FCTNM was founded over two decades ago to support women working in the audiovisual industry.
