Mohamed new top man at Rogers

Nadir Mohamed has been confirmed as president and CEO of Rogers Communications, following weeks of speculation that the 52-year-old telecom exec was set to take over the top job at the Toronto TV and wireless giant.

The Tuesday announcement comes four months after the death of company founder Ted Rogers of congestive heart failure. The appointment is effective immediately.

Mohamed was the ‘unanimous’ choice of the board of directors to succeed Rogers, according to chair Alan Horn, who had been acting CEO since October.

‘He is a highly regarded, principled telecom executive who has the demonstrated ability to build and lead strong teams and to consistently deliver strong results,’ commented Horn in a release.

‘To succeed a visionary business titan like Ted Rogers and to lead a company that has an asset mix as unique and powerful as Rogers’ is a rare and exciting opportunity,’ added Mohamed.

He joined Rogers in 2000 and shortly after was named president and CEO of Rogers Wireless — a lucrative division that represents the bulk of Rogers’ business. Recently, he was president and COO of the company’s communications division, which is comprised of both wireless and cable. Mohamed holds a commerce degree from the University of British Columbia and is a chartered accountant.

In addition to its cable and wireless divisions, Rogers Communications runs 52 radio and TV outlets that include five Citytv stations and Rogers Sportsnet, plus 70 magazine titles, the Toronto Blue Jays baseball club and its home, Rogers Centre.
