Passchendaele has added yet another honor to its list of achievements and, as expected, will receive the Golden Reel award at this year’s Genie Awards. Organizers on Monday also announced that this year’s Claude Jutra prize will go to Quebec helmer Yves-Christian Fournier for his acclaimed teen suicide film Tout est parfait/Everything Is Fine, while the team from Cruising Bar 2 will take the third special Genie for makeup.
Passchendaele‘s total box-office take of $4.4 million in 2008 made Paul Gross’ war epic the frontrunner for the Golden Reel — which is presented each year to the Canadian film that earned the highest domestic box office. Last year’s winner was the Quebec comedy Les 3 p’tits cochons.
Passchendaele, which is nominated for six other Genies — is distributed by Alliance Films. Its producers are Niv Fichman, Frank Siracusa, Francis Damberger and Gross.
Fournier is being recognized with the Claude Jutra award his directorial debut on Tout est parfait, about a 17-year-old whose four best friends follow through on a collective suicide pact without informing him. The film has seven Genie nominations, including a directing nod for Fournier.
Meanwhile, the makeup trio behind Cruising Bar 2 has been picked by the Academy for outstanding achievement in makeup design.
Bruno Gatien, Marie-France Guy and Adrien Morot will receive the special award for their makeup, prosthetic and tattoo work on actor Michel Côté, who portrays the four characters in the comedy sequel.
Morot is known for his work on The Mummy 3 and Bon Cop, Bad Cop, while Guy worked on the first installment Cruising Bar and other titles such as Gothika and Secret Window. Gatien’s list of credits includes Surviving My Mother, Cadavres and The Spiderwick Chronicles.
The special prizes will be handed out at the Genie ceremony on April 4 at the Canada Aviation Museum in Ottawa.
