Scribes from Corner Gas, Flashpoint and This Hour Has 22 Minutes garnered multiple nominations in their respective categories as the Writers Guild of Canada on Thursday unveiled its picks for the annual Canadian Screenwriting Awards.
CTV’s Gas once again leads the half-hour episodic group with three nods including one for creator and star Brent Butt, for the episode ‘Full Load’ — pitting him against fellow writers Kevin White for ‘Bed & Brake Fast’ and Andrew Carr for ‘Bend It Like Brent.’ The popular homegrown comedy is currently in its final season and will air its last episode in the spring. The lone other nominee in the category is Josh Gal for an episode of Showcase’s Rent-a-Goalie.
CBC’s 22 Minutes is also up for three awards, though it competes in the variety category where writers including Jennifer Whalen, Mark Critch, Gavin Crawford and Geri Hall will duke it out with Rick Green and Duncan McKenzie for the ‘Celine Dion’ episode of History Television’s History Bites.
New on the scene is CTV action series Flashpoint, which received CSA nods for two episodes of its first season, putting Tracey Forbes in the running alongside Adam Barken. They face competition from Jason Sherman for an episode of Murdoch Mysteries and Tom Chehak for ‘The Truth’ ep of ReGenesis.
Among feature films, Paul Gross is in the running for Passchendaele, alongside Don McKellar for Blindness and Michael McGowan for the road-trip drama One Week. It’s McGowan’s second CSA nod, following a win in 2005 for the comedy drama Saint Ralph.
‘It’s great to be nominated again… especially against Don and Paul,’ McGowan tells Playback Daily, adding, ‘Those guys are big-time filmmakers and writers, and just to be acknowledged is fantastic.’
The nod is good timing for One Week, which bows on 80 screens March 6 through Mongrel Media.
‘They’ve just done an incredible job and put a lot of resources into [the release],’ McGowan says.
Acclaimed four-hour mini Would Be Kings and MOW Mayerthorpe, both broadcast on CTV, made the short list in the MOW/miniseries category, opposite CBC’s Everest. The documentary nominees are FLicKeR, Passage and The Strangest Dream.
In all, 51 screenwriters are nom’d for the CSAs, which will be handed out April 20 in Toronto.
