Pontypool headed to U.S.

Bruce McDonald’s latest is headed for an American theatrical release following a deal with IFC Films. The indie distributor has picked up McDonald’s Pontypool and says, following the zombie horror’s U.S. debut next month at the Museum of Modern Art, it will release the picture in New York and Los Angeles on May 29, expanding from there to other cities.

The deal was negotiated by Jeff Deutchman of IFC with producers Jeffrey Coghlan, Miles Dale and Ambrose Roche.

Pontypool is a thought-provoking and suspenseful film with superb direction,’ said Jonathan Sehring, president of IFC Entertainment, in a release. ‘It’s a fun genre-bending film destined to become a cult classic.’

Meanwhile, the picture’s international sales agent, Forward Motion Entertainment, has made sales to Kaleidoscope in the U.K., Mirovision in South Korea and to Eagle/Phonenicia Pictures in the Middle East, among others, all of which include theatrical releases. The deals follow talks at Berlinale.

Pontypool is due in Canadian theaters this spring through Maple Pictures. It stars Stephen McHattie (Watchmen) and Lisa Houle (Emily of New Moon).
