OTTAWA — ‘Drama series like Flashpoint, The Border… and the Liberal Party kept us on the edge of our seats,’ joked This Hour Has 22 Minutes star Cathy Jones as she hosted the second annual Indie Awards at the kickoff of the CFTPA’s Prime Time conference.
But the prize for best primetime drama series went to season two of Intelligence and producers Chris Haddock, Arvi Liimatainen and Laura Lightbown, the latter of whom accepted the statuette over the din of cocktail banter.
‘How many producers does it take to screw in a light bulb?’ Jones quipped to the noisy crowd of producers, answering, ‘Do we really need a lightbulb?’
A total of 10 statuettes were awarded in three categories including film, TV and new media.
Best feature film went to C’est pas moi, je le jure! from Montreal’s micro_scope, and producers Luc Dery and Kim McCraw were clearly elated to ride the film’s winning streak after it nabbed two awards during the prestigious Berlin film festival last weekend.
Another repeat winner was best TV movie Mayerthorpe, a copro from Alberta’s Seven24 Films and Toronto’s Slanted Wheel Entertainment, which reaped the same honors at the recent Gemini Awards. Seven24 producers Jordy Randall and Tom Cox were on hand to thank partner Jon Slan.
The best convergent new media prize went to Anash Interactive and producer Ava Karvonen, who said that ‘without a [new media fund] in Canada, there wouldn’t be shows like this… a show about what makes us Canadians unique and different.’
In other kids news, Cookie Jar Entertainment’s Busytown Mysteries won best children’s and youth program.
Jones accepted the best comedy program hardware on behalf of This Hour Has 22 Minutes, noting it was a ‘great show’ and that she’d ‘seen it many times.’
Best documentary program went to Passage, a copro from PTV Productions, John Walker Films and the National Film Board.
Best miniseries went to Les Lavigueur, la vrai histoire and producers Marc S. Grenier and Denis Martel. Best lifestyle or reality show went to ‘Til Debt Do Us Part from Frantic Films.
