Up the Yangtze and My Winnipeg are among 23 films in the running for Cinema Eye awards, which on Tuesday unveiled the nominees for the second annual nonfiction honors amid the hubbub of Sundance.

Winnipeg is up for six awards — just behind frontrunner Waltz with Bashir, which has seven — putting director Guy Maddin up against the formidable Werner Herzog (Encounters at the End of the World) for best director. The category also nodded to Margaret Brown for her The Order of Myths, Bashir helmer Ari Folman and James Marsh for Man on Wire.

Maddin’s love letter to his hometown is also up for cinematography, editing, graphic design, best international film and the broader category of best achievement in nonfiction film.

Up the Yangtze, a favorite on the festival circuit last year, drew four nominations for cinematography, best international, the audience choice award and best debut for director Yung Chang.

‘These fifteen films represent every facet of nonfiction filmmaking, from classic cinema verite to films that employ animation, actors and narrative storytelling in often groundbreaking ways,’ said A.J. Schnack, co-chair of the Cinema Eye Honors, in a statement. Schnack heads this year’s awards with Thom Powers of the Toronto International Film Festival.

The awards will be presented on March 29 in New York City.
