Pilon edges closer to Oscar

For the second year in a row, Canada’s entry in the best foreign-language Oscar race has made it to the final round of voting.

Benoît Pilon’s The Necessities of Life was named to the nine-film shortlist in the Oscar category on Tuesday, giving it just better than 50/50 odds of a nomination when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences reveals its picks next Thursday morning. Last year, Denys Arcand’s L’âge des ténèbres advanced to the final voting stage but failed to make the final shortlist.

The other selections are highlighted by recent Golden Globe winner Waltz with Bashir from Israel and France’s Palme d’Or winning The Class. The others are Austria’s Revanche, Germany’s The Baader Meinhof Complex, Japan’s Departures, Mexico’s Tear This Heart Out, Sweden’s Everlasting Moments and Turkey’s Three Monkeys.
