Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed short Next Floor will bow in Quebec theaters on Jan. 23, according to the film’s distributor Phi Group, after a successful festival run in over 20 countries.
The film, about an opulent dinner party where guests participate in a an eating frenzy as the floors beneath them give way, will play in cities including Montreal, Sherbrooke, Hull, Laval and Quebec City. Next Floor will precede the feature film, Palme d’Or winner Entre les murs.
A Phi Group spokesperson says plans include a release in English Canada though nothing has been confirmed yet. The distributor also has international rights and will release the film once its festival run is complete.
Next Floor will unspool at the upcoming Sundance, Rotterdam and Santa Barbara film festivals. It was named best Canadian short at the Atlantic, Whistler, Toronto and Calgary film fests.
Meanwhile, it’s a quiet weekend for new releases as 20th Century Fox unspools the Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson comedy Bride Wars, while Universal Pictures opens the thriller The Unborn with Gary Oldman.
No new release date has been set for the stop-motion animated feature Edison and Leo, which was to open in select markets Friday through TVA Films. A spokesperson says Jan. 9 was only a ‘tentative’ release date.
Coming up, Alliance Films will next week release the critically well-received drama Last Chance Harvey, with Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, while Maple Pictures readies the horror remake My Bloody Valentine 3D.
