Red Apple eaten by Frantic

Frantic Films is beefing up its television production activities with the purchase of Toronto factual producer Red Apple Entertainment, the company announced on Tuesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Winnipeg-based prodco will merge its Toronto office with Red Apple, which will continue to operate under its current name as a division of Frantic. Red Apple boss Rachel Low will retain her title as president and will oversee the creative side of factual projects for both companies, while Frantic’s VP of live action Lynne Skromeda has been promoted to president of production, overseeing financial and business affairs.

‘Red Apple has a fantastic team with a great track record and we’re looking forward to collaborating with them. Together we’ll be able to offer better solutions to our Canadian and international broadcast partners and build on our respective strengths,’ commented Frantic CEO Jamie Brown in a release.

The deal is the latest by Frantic to steer focus to its live-action division. The company sold its visual effects offshoot to India’s Prime Focus last year, and in September it formed a new advertising subsidiary called Frantic Branded Content + Commercials.

Red Apple is best known for its lifestyle and factual programming, including Chef School, Opening Soon and Fink, while its documentary slate includes Gamer Revolution and The Disappearing Male, broadcast on CBC.
