Closed market? What closed market? The wave of Canuck series that continue to sell to the U.S. – Defying Gravity, Chris & John to the Rescue!, Flashpoint – is enough to raise the hopes of any rights holder. Maybe FX or CBS will like the looks of The Bridge? Does Oxygen have room for Being Erica? Will anyone pay money for reruns of Don Messer’s Jubilee? So we ask:
What Canadian show should the Americans buy next?
I’ve caught a couple of episodes of the new comedy series Less Than Kind and feel it’s fresh and funny and could make a lot of people laugh. Also, my husband’s from Winnipeg and I can really relate. South of the border, they’ve become fascinated with Little Mosque on the Prairie, Corner Gas – and Less Than Kind seems like it could be the next ‘in series.’
As a documentary director/producer, I also want to see more and more documentaries going south… as our stories can really resonate with a North American and world audience.

I think Murdoch Mysteries is a great show. It’s well written with a talented cast, and I think Yannick Bisson is fantastic. This show deserves to be recognized internationally.

They should bring back You Can’t Do That on Television. Even as a kid, I knew that show was Canadian because there was somebody named Alasdair on it. Opposite sketches, locker jokes, Barthy burgers, and green slime. What more do you need in a TV show?

I keep up with tween programming, and I’ve always thought Dark Oracle would make for great U.S. television. It’s got this cool mix of everything that’s currently popular in American culture: comic books, alter egos, dark arts. Paula Brancati is fantastic as Cally.

The Jon Dore Television Show is a secret just waiting to be whispered into American broadcasters’ money-filled ears. We swear we didn’t get paid to say that.
