Busy times at Insight

VANCOUVER — Insight Film Studios is in production on a slate of female-aimed thrillers and Sci-Fi Channel movies, all shooting before Christmas.

‘We are running on all cylinders and above full capacity,’ says company head Kirk Shaw.

Production has wrapped on the thriller Trust, centering on the wife of a successful entrepreneur who receives mysterious e-mails about her husband’s fidelity. Coproduced with Vancouver’s Really Real Films for The Movie Network and TF1 in France, the movie is written by Jack Messitt (Midnight Movie), directed by Allan Harmon (Andromeda, Afghan Knights), and produced by Cynde Harmon.

Executive producers are Tim Johnson, Joey Plager, Tom Berry and Jeffery Lando. Berry’s company Reel One/Premiere Bobine has Canadian rights to the movie. TF1 is distributing internationally, while Insight has U.S. rights and plans to sell Trust as part of a package of movies to a cable outlet.

Desperate Escape, about an amnesiac who discovers that her loving husband may not be what he seems, is the next thriller set for production. Shooting begins in early November with director George Mendeluk (Men of Means). Berry is a producing partner.

Insight is also set to shoot the first of three movies for Sci-Fi Channel over the next couple of months.

The $2.3-million Ice Twisters stars Mark Moses (Desperate Housewives, Mad Men) and is directed by Steve Monroe (House of 9, It Waits). The story is about eager young scientists who launch an experiment they believe will reverse the effects of climate change — with disastrous results. Financing also includes Entertainment One Canada and a distribution advance from Cinetel. The shoot wraps Oct. 24.

Shooting is also underway on Damage, a direct-to-DVD starring wrestler/actor Steve Austen (The Condemned) and produced with L.A.’s Jack and Joe Nasser (Anna Nicole). Jeff King (Ruslan, Kill Switch) is directing, and the writer is Frank Hannah (Cooler). The story follows a recently paroled ex-con, forced into the illegal world of underground fights. Insight Film Releasing is handling international distribution.
