Newman, Gardner get special Geminis

The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television has named the winners of the special awards for this year’s Geminis.

Docu-comedy Qallunaat! Why White People Are Funny has won the Canada Award for programs dealing with diversity, while CBC political chief Don Newman takes the Gordon Sinclair Award for excellence in broadcast journalism.

The Earle Grey Award, recognizing a performer’s body of work and their contribution to raising the international profile of Canadian TV, goes to David Gardner (Traders, Road to Avonlea), while David Cole (Cold Squad, Due South) takes the Margaret Collier Award for writing.

Gord Martineau, news anchor of Citytv Toronto, has won the Gemini Humanitarian Award for his work with area charities including The Hospital for Sick Children.

The awards will be presented at the various Gemini galas on Oct. 20, 22 and Nov. 28.
