A forensic anthropologist and homicide detective put the breaks on CTV’s much-hyped Canadian Idol season finale on Wednesday, when the second episode of Global crime drama Bones won the night among Canuck viewers.
Bones scored 1.5 million viewers in its 8 p.m. slot, spoiling the night for Idol, which averaged 1.3 million eyeballs as Alberta’s Theo Tams was named the winner. (All numbers 2+)
Idol‘s season-six ender was down 41% from last year’s, which grabbed 2.2 million viewers, though the reality singing competition remains strong for CTV. The show peaked at 1.8 million viewers when the winner was revealed.
The top three Idol competitors will embark on a 26-date, cross-country concert this fall beginning Nov. 9.
Meanwhile, the series premiere of CTV’s So You Think You Can Dance Canada delivered 1.2 million viewers on Sept. 11 after a big push that included teams of dancers promoting the show in cities including Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary. Dance Canada proved especially popular with female viewers, who accounted for 71% of the total audience.
The reality competition was followed by Flashpoint at 10 p.m. with a continued strong viewership of nearly 1.3 million viewers.
Also making its debut last week was J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi drama Fringe, which debuted with a special 90-minute episode to 1.5 million viewers on CTV. The show will settle into its Tuesday, 9 p.m. timeslot on A beginning Sept. 16.
Fringe aired in part opposite the second episode of Global’s 90210, which managed only 670,000 viewers — down nearly 50% from its series premiere on Sept. 2. The story was somewhat the same over on U.S. network The CW, where the spinoff of the popular 90s series saw a 30% decline from the previous week, according to Variety.
90210 may get some help from the hit Fox series House, which returns for its fifth season on Global, Tuesday at 8 p.m. Global also rolls out Survivor: Gabon on Thursday, which marks the 17th season of the reality series.
