Maple grabs Goats

Maple Pictures has jumped on board George Clooney’s latest project, announcing on Wednesday that it acquired the Canadian rights to Men Who Stare at Goats.

The film is based on the 2005 nonfiction book by U.K. journalist Jon Ronson, about a secret unit created within the U.S. Army called the First Earth Battalion, which began to believe in the paranormal as an alternative way of combating war. The title refers to the idea that one can kill a goat by staring at it.

The project reunites Clooney with Grant Heslov, his writing partner on the acclaimed drama Good Night, and Good Luck. Heslov will helm the project, which the pair is producing through their Smoke House shingle, while Clooney is set to star.

The deal was negotiated by Maple co-president Laurie May and SVP of distribution John Bain, and sales agent Helen Lee-Kim of Mandate International.

‘We are thrilled to acquire this film as our entire creative team loved the script, which is politically interesting and hysterically funny,’ commented May in a release.

Upcoming Maple films include Oliver Stone’s biopic W, and actioner The Spirit, Frank Miller’s follow-up to Sin City.
