TIFF 2008: CFC unveils copro training program

The Canadian Film Centre has struck a unique agreement with BBC, BBC Worldwide and Canwest to create its first international coproduction training program — aimed at encouraging a new level of collaboration between Canuck and U.K. TV writers.

This weekend also saw the Ontario government unveil a $2.5-million gift to CFC aimed at improving its facilities.

The Canada/U.K. Script Incubation Program, announced Saturday at an intimate TIFF party at Toronto’s Spoke Club, will provide three Canadian and three U.K. scribes a chance to be mentored by leading TV story consultants and writers from both territories through workshops, case studies, story and script meetings. The program is based on an exchange model that will begin next year.

‘For 20 years we have established shared learning and creative partnerships for talent. With the launch of our first co-production program we now bring Canadian storytellers to the world,’ commented CFC exec director Slawko Klymkiw in a release.

‘BBC Drama is committed to training and investing in writing talent and CFC’s innovative program is a fantastic opportunity for us all to discover new talent and work with our Canadian partners,’ added BBC Wales head of drama Julie Gardner.

The goal is that projects developed through the initiative would receive a television licence or development deal. Details are available at www.cfccreates.com.

The Ontario Liberal government was to unveil its gift to CFC as festival-goers gathered at the center for its annual TIFF barbeque. The $2.5 million — on top of $10 million pledged in the 2005 provincial budget — will go to repairs and expansion of CFC’s training programs.

‘The entertainment industry is an important part of Ontario’s economy. By supporting the development of our best creative talent, we help strengthen Ontario’s position in the rapidly growing cultural industries,’ said Culture Minister Aileen Carroll in a statement.
