No disrespect to the fine folks behind Death Race or The House Bunny, but by mid-August the summer is pretty much over as far as movies are concerned. And so – looking back on Indy, WALL-E, Zohan, Prince Caspian, Mulder, Scully and all those superheroes – we ask:

What was the best movie of the summer?

Best summer movie? Without a doubt, Space Chimps. Kidding! Hands down, Iron Man. Blew The Dark Knight out of the water.

My vote would go to Hancock – a different spin on the overwhelmingly dominant superhero genre, with mythic dimensions and a typically magnetic performance by Will Smith. Shot in distinctive fashion by local-guy-made-Hollywood Tobias Schliessler, who shot my first feature back in 1984.

Everything I saw was at Cannes in May. Although I liked Eastwood’s Changeling, the best of the lot for me was Atom Egoyan’s Adoration. Intelligent issues dealt with in nuanced performances, beautifully shot and scored – what more could you ask for?

I very much enjoyed watching beautiful European actors schtupping in Catherine Breillat’s The Last Mistress, but then I also got a big kick watching Pierce Brosnan and Meryl Streep belting out Abba hits in Mama Mia! So, go figure.
