Doc Soup spreads west

Hot Docs has partnered with the Calgary International Film Festival and the Whistler Film Festival to expand its popular Doc Soup screening series to Calgary and Vancouver this fall.

The monthly series has been running in Toronto since 2001, a popular attraction for area cinephiles that has sneak previewed titles including No End in Sight and Jesus Camp, often with directors in attendance for Q&As with the audience. Films selected for the Calgary and Vancouver spin-offs will be premieres in those markets, say organizers, and will bring in directors as guests at select screenings.

The Doc Soups will be picked by Hot Docs programmer Sean Farnel and his team, with help from the Calgary and Whistler festivals.

‘Both festivals have developed loyal followings and we’re certain that they’ll embrace Doc Soup as Toronto audiences have,’ said Hot Docs exec director Chris McDonald in a statement.

The Vancouver version will debut in October, running to March at Pacific Cinematheque. Calgary’s Doc Soup will take place at the Cineplex Odeon Eau Claire Market, and will run November to May.
