Clément out at SRC

MONTREAL — The man who brought the hit Quebec drama Les Bougons and popular talk-fest Tout le monde en parle to Canadian viewers is leaving Radio-Canada.

Radio-Canada announced Wednesday that its director of French-language television Mario Clément is leaving the pubcaster. ‘It’s not a firing. It’s a mutual decision made by management and by Clément. Both parties thought it best to end the association,’ SRC spokesman Marc Pichette told Playback Daily.

Although Clément, who has been with SRC since 2003, had the vision to program two of the province’s most watched shows in recent memory, he’s also been widely criticized for slating a number of dramas that just haven’t hit a chord with viewers.

Like most conventional TV, the French-language pubcaster has been struggling to maintain viewers in the multi-channel universe. In 1988, Radio-Canada had a 27% share. Today, it hovers at around 15%.
