jPod fans ready Lego campaign

Fans of jPod plan to make their voices heard through a mailing campaign in which they plan to send blocks of Lego to CBC and its programming boss Kirstine Layfield.

The mail-in campaign — due to start next week, to coincide with the Leo Awards — is an extension of the savejpod.ca website and corresponding Facebook group that sprang up a few days after the show was axed in March. jPod is nom’d for 15 Leos, including best dramatic series, screenwriting and in several performance categories.

Guelph, ON-based web designer Sean Yo, who created the site with a friend, concedes it’s unlikely the show will be brought back for a second season despite the campaign, but says that’s not the only reason they decided to launch the site.

‘My hope is to have the CBC re-evaluate the importance of audience measurement for Internet distribution, [based on the] sheer volume of people watching online,’ Yo tells Playback Daily, adding that the pubcaster shouldn’t only focus on BBM Nielsen ratings to determine a show’s success. The 13-ep run of the series is still available on cbc.ca, and through BitTorrent.

Yo says CBC is missing an opportunity to reach a younger demographic by cancelling the ‘hip, intelligent’ series, which is based on Douglas Coupland’s best-selling novel about video game developers in Vancouver. jPod is produced by Larry Sugar and J.B. Sugar of No Equal Entertainment.

The savejpod.ca website has had about 65,000 visitors to date, according to Yo, while the Facebook group has about 3,000 members.

Vancouver-based visual artist Miranda Mallinson, who started the Facebook group and the Lego campaign, says she hopes for at least a thousand envelopes. Lego-like bricks and figures are a jPod motif.

‘The reason that we arrived on the Lego figures is because we thought it was fun, playful and innocuous,’ she says, adding the ultimate goal is to have CBC produce a second season.

Ceeb officials could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. plans to run jPod on its new site, TheWb.com, which is due to test launch this month.
