CTV slots offbeat docs

Fresh from its warm reception at Hot Docs, S&M: Short and Male has been added to CTV’s schedule, with the network planning to air the feature doc by Howard Goldberg on May 24. The doc — produced by Ina Fichman (Black Coffee) of Montreal’s Instinct Films in association with the network — looks at the challenges short men face in various cultures.

In China, for instance, you can’t get a driver’s licence if you’re under 5’3′. In the U.S., the wage difference between tall and short fellows averages out to more than $1,000 an inch.

‘A lot of people dismiss the height issue,’ said Goldberg, speaking to Playback during production. ‘But it can be a very profound thing for some men. It has everything to do with who you are, and at the same time nothing to do with who you are.’

The network also recently slotted My Messy Life, a doc by Josh Freed of the Montreal Gazette about ‘the war between messy and neat.’ Freed — as proudly messy as Goldberg is short — produced with Canal D and CTV and spends the humorous one-hour looking at the habits of neatniks and slobs. It airs May 17.
