Joe wins at Rosies

Joe Media was the big winner, but Seven24 Films walked away with some of the most prestigious categories on Saturday night at the Alberta Film and Television Awards in Edmonton.

The Rosies for best dramatic series and MOW both went to Calgary-based Seven24, for Heartland and Mayerthorpe, respectively. Best director went to Heartland‘s Dean Bennett, while Mayerthorpe scribe Andrew Wreggitt took the prize for drama screenwriting.

The only performance win for the company went to Landon Liboiron for his turn in Mayerthorpe, which earlier this year retold the story of how four RCMP officers lost their lives in the titular small town outside of Edmonton. The family drama Heartland debuted this season on CBC, and is due back in 2008/09.

The 11 wins for Joe Media were in mostly technical categories, though the Calgary shop took both best commercial and PSA, and tied for best musical and variety on the strength of The Fiddle and The Drum, a combination of ballet and the music of co-creator Joni Mitchell. It tied with My Song is My Gift: A George Canyon Christmas by Corkscrew Media.

The bulk of Joe’s wins were for The Secret of the Nutcracker, the CBC show which, among dramas, won best editing for Paul Mortimer, overall sound for Frank Laratta, original score for John Estacio, plus art direction for Louise Middleton, costumes for Wendy Partridge and makeup and Byron Callaghan.

Best feature went to Walk All Over Me from producer Carolyn McMaster of Chaos, a Film Company.
