Global is sticking with what works for 2008/09, and has ordered second seasons of The Guard, The Best Years and ‘da Kink in My Hair. The network on March 20 cited the ‘solid statistics’ of the three scripted series and their performance with key demographics, in particular among 18-49s.
‘It takes real talent to make great stories into great television, and we have it all here within our amazing writing and production communities,’ said content boss Christine Shipton in a release. ‘Our commitment to bringing Canadian drama back to Canwest remains firm.’
The Guard placed highest of the three, clocking in a season average in the 500,000s after its high-flying debut in the 800s. ‘da Kink in My Hair averaged in the 300s last fall, airing Sunday nights next to The Simpsons, followed by a softer performance by The Best Years, which ended its summertime run with 201,000 per episode. (All numbers 2+.)
However, Global notes that from premiere to season ender, Best Years – a college-set series from Blueprint Entertainment and Degrassi: The Next Generation veteran Aaron Martin – increased its numbers by 30% in 2+ and by 54% with 18-49s. The network also reports that ‘da Kink clicked with urban audiences, topping CBC’s Sophie and jPod in Toronto by 16% and 88%, respectively.
Production on the second seasons is said to be starting in the coming weeks. ‘da Kink is produced by Barna-Alper Productions and Defiant Entertainment in Toronto. The Guard comes from Halifax Film and Brightlight Pictures in B.C. A Global spokesperson was not certain how many episodes of each series have been ordered.
About a Girl, a second Brightlight show, has been shelved, according to the B.C. production company. The series, a comedy also set at a college, which debuted recently on Global’s sister network E!, was co-commissioned by parent Canwest and The N in the U.S. The first season will air on E!, but a second will not be made, says Brightlight.
About a Girl was at first unveiled as a Global show, along with other domestic titles including True Pulp Murder and the second-window Durham County, which aired first on The Movie Network and Movie Central. True Pulp Murder has since aired on Mystery and has a second window on Global, while Durham County is due to air in May or June.
In other scheduling news, Global is set to premiere the fourth season of Boston Legal, previously on E!, on April 8 at 10 p.m., leading out of Big Brother.
