Distributors are cheering following a series of police raids that saw more than 41,000 pirated DVDs seized in Toronto. Investigators say raids on six retail stories, a print shop and a private home in Toronto last week led to the shutdown of a piracy operation that ‘included thousands of movie titles currently in theaters, which are not yet legitimately available on DVD.’
Police from Toronto’s 42 Division were assisted by investigators from the Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association, which represents the American MPAA. They say the house was equipped with 81 DVD burners, some 3,500 blank discs, and other supplies. Two people have been charged with fraud.
‘Film theft is not a victimless crime — it hurts everyone in Canada who is involved in the production and distribution of filmed content and robs local coffers of significant tax revenues,’ said Mike Robinson, CMPDA’s director of anti-piracy operations for North America, in a statement. ‘We thank the Toronto Police for their diligence in this investigation and for their continued efforts in the fight against movie piracy in Canada.’
