Actors Caroline Cave and Aaron Poole turned the ACTRA Awards in Toronto into a ‘Beautiful’ thing.
Poole and Cave, the costars of Ed Gass-Donnelly’s This Beautiful City, took home the male and female performance honors, respectively, at the annual awards, which were handed out Feb. 29 at the Carlu event hall.
‘He was really fearless about making a Toronto movie, against all odds,’ Poole said in praise of Gass-Donnelly as he accepted his trophy in front of fellow actors.
Gass-Donnelly’s debut feature follows five people in Toronto’s inner city as their lives intersect amid a clash between condo owners and homeless people.
Cave used her acceptance speech to give a shout-out against the federal government’s Bill C-10, which threatens to withhold public support for film and TV shows if the content is deemed offensive. ‘Young People Fucking, This Beautiful City, Lolita, censorship be damned,’ an emotional Cave said onstage.
Other trophy winners at the ACTRA Awards included Matt Watts, taking top honors in the voice category for his work on the CBC Radio series Canada 2056. He beat out four other thesps who contended for voice work on cartoons.
‘Fuck animation. It’s all about radio drama,’ an enthusiastic Watts said as he grabbed his trophy.
Another emotional highpoint at the ACTRA Awards came when Corner Gas star Eric Peterson was honored with a lifetime achievement award.
