Jim Hughson is sticking with CBC. The veteran sports broadcaster has inked a new six-year agreement with the network that will see him through the end of the new CBC/NHL broadcast agreement in 2013/14, it was announced on Tuesday.
The Vancouver-based Hughson had been working for both CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada and Rogers Sportsnet. According to reports, both networks had pursued Hughson in hope of signing him to exclusive deals. His contract with both expires at the end of this season.
Hughson will work on both Hockey Night in Canada and Rogers Blue Jays Baseball on CBC.
‘Jim is a talent like no other, and we are thrilled to continue our partnership with him,’ commented CBC Sports boss Scott Moore in a release. ‘With Jim and Bob Cole, CBC Sports now employs the top two play-by-play announcers in this country for our hockey broadcasts.’
‘I’m honored and excited to continue my association with CBC Sports,’ said Hughson.
The Gemini Award-winning sportscaster began his career in NHL broadcasting in 1979 and joined HNIC during the 2005/06 season. Career highlights include calling Wayne Gretzky’s final game in Canada in 1999.
In other CBC news, programming boss Kirstine Layfield has been named a Young Global Leader for 2008 by the World Economic Forum. She joins 245 other execs from 65 countries.
The forum of YGLs is comprised of outstanding, next-generation leaders under the age of 40, according to a release. Other Canadian YGLs for 2008 include Environment Minister John Baird.
