Sandra Oh will trade in her scrubs for, presumably, something a little more glam at next month’s Genie Awards, which on Monday tapped the Grey’s Anatomy star as host, injecting some star power into the 28th annual film gala.
The Ottawa-born star — best known as the fiery Dr. Cristina Yang on Grey’s, seen here on CTV — will front the Genies on March 3, when the show returns to both the Metro Toronto Convention Center and its previous dinner-theater format.
‘It is an absolute honor to have Sandra Oh as the host for the Genie Awards. Her award-winning accomplishments as an actor in film, TV and theater, both at home and abroad, are a testament to the kind of talent that Canada has become famous for around the world,’ commented Sara Morton, CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, in a release.
The Academy plans to mirror the informal structure of the Golden Globes, setting up tables for attendees, unlike the past couple of year’s shows, in which CHUM combined after-party interviews with clips from an otherwise unseen awards presentation. The show drew a disappointing 34,000 viewers on Citytv stations in Ontario, Vancouver and Calgary combined.
This year, an hour-long broadcast will air on Canwest’s E! and its IFC specialty channel, with lead-up cross-promotion done on Global and ET Canada. The Genies will be produced by Gemini vet Lynn Harvey.
Oh follows in the footsteps of previous hosts including comedienne Andrea Martin (My Big Fat Greek Wedding), Kid in the Hall Scott Thompson, and the Trailer Park Boys, who hosted last year’s event.
Oh has two Genie awards to her name, for 1994’s Double Happiness and Don McKellar’s 1998 sci-fi drama Last Night. She also picked up a Screen Actors Guild Award for her turn in the 2004 comedy Sideways and another, plus a Golden Globe, for her work on Grey’s.
‘The ability to bring such a high caliber Canadian host to the program is a direct reflection of the great achievements of Canadian film over the past year,’ added Christine Shipton, SVP of drama and factual content at Canwest.
