Book deal closes for Derek

Kids will soon be able to enjoy Life with Derek as a bedtime story. Shaftesbury Films on Monday unveiled with Grosset & Dunlap, a division of Penguin Young Readers Group, plans to turn the popular live-action kids comedy into a series of novels. The first volume of the Derek tales will hit North American bookshelves this summer.

The show focuses on a modern blended family and the adjustments that the children must make to life with their new, seemingly strange step-siblings.

Grosset & Dunlap president and publisher Debra Dorfman thinks the series will provide perfect fodder for young readers. ‘We are very excited about our partnership with Shaftesbury. Life with Derek is a perfect television show to transition into books for middle grade readers,’ she said in a statement.

The show, which airs on Family Channel in Canada, has been picked up across the globe, running in more than 12 different languages and in more than 100 countries, including Japan, Australia and Latin America.
