CFTPA puts Mosque against Gas

OTTAWA — CBC’s Little Mosque on the Prairie has been nominated for best comedy series or program at the inaugural CFTPA Indie Awards after being shut out of the 2007 Gemini Awards, while the Sarah Polley-helmed Away From Her and the David Cronenberg-directed Eastern Promises are battling it out for best feature film.

Little Mosque is up against CTV’s Corner Gas, Showcase’s Rent-a-Goalie, Moose TV and The Jane Show in the ‘for producers by producers’ awards to be held in Ottawa on Feb. 20 in conjunction with the CFTPA’s annual Prime Time conference.

CFTPA president and CEO Guy Mayson says that while some of the award categories may mirror those of the Gemini Awards, ‘it’s time for the Canadian production industry to celebrate its own.’

‘There are already great awards shows out there, but these new awards are a signal to the industry of the great range of production talent out there, and the role of the producer cannot be ignored,’ he adds.

Also nominated for best feature film are The Tracey Fragments, Congorama and Continental, un film sans fusil.

Nominated for best primetime drama series is CBC’s Intelligence, produced by Haddock Entertainment’s Chris Haddock, Laura Lightbrown and Arvi Liimatainen; and Durham Country, by Back Alley Film Productions’ Janis Lundman, Adrienne Mitchel and Michael Prupas. Other nominees in this category are Blood Ties, Race to Mars and ReGenesis.

Two productions from Incendo Productions, Abducted and A Life Interrupted, are vying for best MOW against In God’s Country and The Robber Bride — both from Shaftesbury Films — and Screen Siren Pictures’ Luna: Spirit of the Whale.

Up for best lifestyle or reality program or series are Recreating Eden, Designer Guys, Chris & John to the Rescue, Vanity Insanity and Triple Sensation, while the best mini-series nominees are October 1970, Redemption SK, Dragon Boys, St. Urbain’s Horsemen and Above and Beyond.

The Great Canadian Polar Bear Adventure, Mystery Hunters, Generation XXL, Life With Derek and Storm Hawks are up for best children’s or youth program or series, while Etoiles.tv, TotalDrama Island 8 — Totally Interactive, Uh Oh! Flamingo, Life with Derek and www.oddjobjack.com are in the running for best convergent new media.

Best documentary nominees are Jonestown: Paradise Lost, Radiant City, Flight from Darkness, The Bodybuilder and I, and Saving Luna.
