Protect culture, say unions

ACTRA and the Writers Guild of Canada called on Ottawa to put culture ahead of the market on Friday, in a joint submission to Industry Canada.

‘The current foreign ownership rules as they apply to broadcasters do not ensure that Canadian news and entertainment programming are made from and reflect a Canadian perspective,’ said Maureen Parker, executive director of the WGC, in a statement.

The submission comes in response to a discussion paper issued by Industry Canada’s Competition Policy Review Panel, and warns against the removal of cultural protections.
