Three Canadian films have made the cut at Slamdance, which will open next month with the comic drama Real Time by writer/director Randy Cole.
The picture follows the Canadian Film Centre grad’s 2002 picture 19 Months, and stars Randy Quaid (Brokeback Mountain) as a hit man who gives an old acquaintance and compulsive gambler, played by Jay Baruchel (Million Dollar Baby, Knocked Up), one hour to live. It shot earlier this year in Hamilton, ON — a mash-up by January Films, Devonshire Productions, APB Pictures and Serendipity Point Films — and will make its world premiere when it opens the Utah festival on Jan. 17. Slamdance runs concurrent with Sundance.
Also en route to the 14th edition of Slamdance are the drama Portage and the horror comedy Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer, from writer/director Jon Knautz.
Portage — directed by newcomers Ezra Krybus, Matthew Miller and Sascha Drews, who also penned the script — follows four teenage girls whose adventure in the Canadian wilderness goes awry when their trip leader is accidentally killed, leaving them to find their way home with a body in tow.
Jack Brooks, from Ottawa’s Brookstreet Pictures, stars writer/producer Trevor Matthews as a plumber and night school student at war with evil, supernatural forces. Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street) also stars.
Portage will play in competition.
