Comic Russell Peters has struck a script deal with Fox and is currently in development with the U.S. broadcaster on a sitcom based on his life.
The as-of-yet untitled project — the brainchild of the Toronto funnyman and his brother Clayton Peters, who is also his manager — will focus on growing up in a working-class, multicultural South Asian household.
‘It’s really a snapshot of where my family was 10 years ago. I’m still living at home, my dad is retired, mom is working part-time and my brother is living at home too,’ commented Peters in a release.
Peters and his brother pitched their idea to Fox execs Bob Huber and new president Kevin Reilly, after they saw his recent shows at the Just For Laughs festival in Montreal.
The brothers are in the midst of meeting with writers, said Peters, adding, ‘We need to find the right partners to really make this the best possible project that it can be.’
A spokesperson for Peters tells Playback Daily once the pilot script is submitted and approved by Fox, the pilot will likely shoot in April in L.A., though that does not necessarily guarantee the show a spot on the Fox schedule.
Peters, who resides in Los Angeles, recently became the first comic to sell out Toronto’s Air Canada Centre, where he performed for more than 30,000 people. Coming up, he will appear at New York’s Madison Square Garden in February.
