Devil comes to Montreal

Bruce Dern is in Montreal for three weeks shooting the horror Swamp Devil for Muse Productions.

The $2.5-million MOW casts the star, whose credits include an Oscar-nominated role in Coming Home, as a man wrongly accused of murder in a small town. In order to clear his name, he must prove the existence of the titular tree-like creature. Cindy Sampson (The Last Kiss) also stars with Nicolas Wright (Tipping Point, The Business), under director David Winning (Dinotopia: The Series, Andromeda) and cinematographer Daniel Vincelette (Leaving Metropolis).

‘There’s nothing scarier than the deep, dark woods — it’s rich with very primeval fears — and it’s an excellent place to launch our story,’ said Winning in a statement.

Special effects supervisor George Tucci (The Covenant, Prank Patrol) has developed the Swamp Devil’s branch-like arms, and has concocted a distinctive ‘mud blood’ that will ooze from its injuries. The screenplay was penned by Ethlie Ann Vare (Tales from the Neverending Story).

The film, which wraps Oct. 11, is produced by Irene Litinsky (Human Trafficking) and Ric Nish (Durham County) and exec produced by Michael Prupas (The Wind in the Willows), Robert Halmi, Sr. (The Lion in Winter) and Robert Halmi, Jr. (Lonesome Dove). A Muse/RHI Entertainment coproduction, it will be broadcast in Canada on Superchannel and distributed internationally by RHI.
