The Second City’s Next Comedy Legend will return to CBC next year despite a soft inaugural run in the Tuesday 9 p.m. timeslot, yielding an average 170,000 viewers following its premiere on July 10.
The season finale, in which Nova Scotia’s Megan McDowell was named the winner, drew 151,000 viewers during the final week of summer holidays on Aug. 28 — slightly less than its premiere of 155,000.
‘We liked the show, as it was an opportunity to put some fresh programming on during the summer,’ says CBC spokesman Jeff Keay in a comment to Playback Daily, adding the net anticipates that Legend will return.
Hosted by former WWE star Trish Stratus, the reality show followed sketch comedy performers from across the country while they competed in front of judges including Joe Flaherty, Elvira Kurt and Mick Napier. Legend, exec produced by Second City CEO Andrew Alexander and Morgan Elliott of Suddenly SeeMore… Productions, peaked at 202,000 viewers on July 24.
Outside of summer, Tuesdays are traditionally a strong night for CBC comedies, including The Rick Mercer Report and This Hour Has 22 Minutes, which debuted last fall to 713,000 and 727,000 viewers, respectively.
