Even though David Beckham did not play, the game between his L.A. Galaxy teammates and the Toronto FC played well for CBC. The network drew 301,000 viewers to the Aug. 5 game — its second-highest audience so far for Major League Soccer. The match, which resulted in a scoreless draw, peaked at 476,000 viewers. Beckham was injured and sat out.
CBC nabbed 503,000 viewers for the FC’s match against DC United back in May, though the game was joined in progress following game five of the Ottawa-Buffalo playoff series, in which the Senators advanced to the Stanley Cup final.
This is the first season of MLS coverage on CBC. It is averaging 151,000 viewers season-to-date.
Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays’ three-game series against American League East rival New York Yankees on Rogers Sportsnet last week nabbed an average 364,000 viewers — 76,000 more than the average Jays game on the channel.
Game two of the rancorous series — marked by a number of verbal outbursts and the suspension of Yankees starter Roger Clemens — averaged 364,000 viewers, while more than 430,000 tuned in for the Jays’ 15-4 win over the Yankees in game three on Aug. 9.
