Pirate Master sinks

Pirate Master, the Mark Burnett reality contest set on a mock pirate ship, has been cancelled by CBS. It just wasn’t worth any treasure.

The U.S. network — which debuted the summer series in May on Thursdays at 8 p.m., then moved it to Tuesdays at 10 p.m. — pulled the plug this week. It will stream the remaining five episodes online.

CTV is replacing the series with a simulcast of Law & Order: SVU, and is exploring the option of providing the remaining episodes online, but no decision has yet been made.

The show’s May 31 premiere on CTV recorded 1.04 million viewers — about 60% in the A18-49 demo. Audiences declined in the weeks following the premiere. CTV attempted to engage viewers from the start, with a ‘Captain’s Log’ contest and online games, and recently launched a virtual ‘Spot the Captain’ product placement contest for Captain Morgan. On the PirateMaster.ca microsite, CTV says the Captain’s Log contest ended one minute before midnight on July 23 due to the show’s cancellation.
