Nitro still top of box

Quebec continued to dominate the box office last week, with Alliance Atlantis Vivafilm’s Nitro leading the way, adding another $800,000 for the week ending July 12, for a total box-office take of $2.5 million after two weeks in theaters.

The action pic topped the chart among Canadian-made films, and placed sixth overall, ahead of the thriller 1408 and comedies Knocked Up and Evan Almighty.

Remaining at number two among domestic titles, the large-format doc Dinosaures 3D: Les géants de la Patagonie, from director Marc Fafard (Vikings: Journey to New Worlds), has made $140,763 thus far on one screen after its debut on June 15. The film, from Quebec City’s Sky High Entertainment, follows Argentine paleontologist Rodolfo Coria as he explores the history, evolution and extinction of dinosaurs.

The remainder of the chart is unchanged from the previous week, with Sarah Polley’s Away from Her at number three with a total box-office take of $1.3 million, while Christal Films’ A vos marques…Party! hangs on at number four. The French-language comedy has made $2 million since its debut in March.

Meanwhile, after two weeks, Paramount Pictures’ Transformers remained at the top of the chart among Hollywood and foreign titles with $15.3 million, while Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, from Warner Bros., and Disney’s Ratatouille placed number two and three, respectively. The Potter film’s performance is based on just two days on screens.
